Successful coach Voss-Tecklenburg stays with the DFB

Before the World Cup, the most important personal details in women’s football have been clarified: Martina Voss-Tecklenburg is extending her contract with the DFB. The 55-year-old will remain coach of the national team until 2025, which led her to runner-up at the European Championships.
The German Football Association has extended the contract of national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg until 2025. The DFB announced this in a video link with the 55-year-old, the association president Bernd Neuendorf and Joti Chatzialexiou, sporting director of the national teams. Voss-Tecklenburg had led the DFB team to the final against hosts England (1:2 aet) at the European Championships last summer and triggered a wave of euphoria in Germany.
“These were good discussions, I expressly refer to the technical side. But what is also very important to me is the human side. I felt that it had become a very familiar relationship in the last few weeks,” said Neuendorf. Voss-Tecklenburg is one of “the defining faces and a great ambassador of women’s football, even beyond the borders of Germany,” said the DFB President: “The great success as runners-up in Europe last year was a catalyst for a great development for women in football.”
Assistant Britta Carlson will also stay until 2025, she has been a confidant of the national coach for many years. “The thoughts are of course that we are planning something else. We are looking forward to the future and to everything that is to come,” said Voss-Tecklenburg. She is “very proud”.
New contract shorter than desired by national coach
Another cooperation between Voss-Tecklenburg and the association had been indicated for some time. The 125-time national player herself had said that she would like to stay until the 2027 World Cup. The DFB is applying together with Belgium and the Netherlands to host it.
The new contract now only runs until the EM 2025, the host of which will be announced by UEFA this Tuesday. The DFB has thus clarified the most important personnel issue for the women before the next international matches on Good Friday in Sittard against the Netherlands (8 p.m.) and next Tuesday in Nuremberg (6 p.m. / ARD) against Brazil.
Voss-Tecklenburg took over the office from Horst Hrubesch in 2018. At the 2019 World Cup in France, she failed with the German team in the quarterfinals against Sweden and thus also missed the Olympic participation. At the European Championships last year, the native of Duisburg led the DFB women to the final, where they first lost to hosts England. The German team wants to play for the title at the World Cup. In the preliminary round, Morocco, Colombia and South Korea are the opponents.
