The Kiel shipyard is building two new class 212-CD submarines for the German Navy and four more for the Norwegian. The order is part of a cooperation between the two countries.

Thyssenkrupp Marine System (TKMS) has the more than five billion euro submarine order from Germany and Norway finally wrapped up. The corresponding contracts were signed on Thursday, the company announced.

TKMS boss Rolf Wirtz spoke of a milestone and said: “The Norwegian and German navies are getting the most modern submarines in the world, international and industrial cooperation will permanently shape cooperation in the maritime sector and we have created capacity utilization for our company. ” The order includes the delivery of two submarines to the German Navy and four to the Norwegian Navy. The order volume for the “212CD” ​​project is around 5.5 billion euros.

The budget committee of the Bundestag, along with a number of other procurement projects, gave the green light for the German-Norwegian submarine project a good two weeks ago. According to the announcement, the construction of the first submarine at the TKMS shipyard in Kiel will begin in 2023. The delivery of the first submarine for the Norwegian Navy is expected for 2029, the delivery of the two boats for the German Navy is planned for 2032 and 2034. The German shipyard is working with the Norwegian arms company Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace (KDA), with which a partnership has existed since 2017.
