Control Philips Hue with Google Assistant: Here’s how

CONTROL NEST SMART HOME WITH GOOGLE ASSISTANT: THIS IS HOW IT WORKS

If you use the Philips Hue smart lighting system, you can also connect and control the lamps with Google Assistant. You can find out from us how the facility works.

The smart Philips Hue lighting system offers many possibilities in everyday life: you can use the lamps as an alarm clock and make it easier to start the morning with the light slowly getting brighter. Even when you get home from work, the lights can come on as soon as you walk in the door.

Another advantage: The Philips Hue lamps can be synchronized with your media. These include music services such as Spotify or the voice assistant Google Assistant, which you can connect to the smart lamps and integrate into your Google Home system.

In conjunction with Philips Hue, your smart home can be controlled by the voice assistant Google Assistant. You have to make sure to always say “OK Google” first before making a request so that the device responds to your voice. If you can’t think of any suitable voice commands, we have put together some suggestions for you that can make your everyday life easier:

  • OK Google, turn all lights on/off.
  • OK Google, dim the lights to 70%.
  • OK Google, set the light in the children’s room to blue.
  • OK Google, enable reading in the office.
  • OK Google, start falling asleep naturally.
  • OK Google, turn on the Hue lights.
  • OK Google, set my bedside lamp to pink.
  • OK Google, always wake me up at 6 a.m. on weekdays.

Set up Philips Hue with Google Assistant

If you connect Philips Hue to smart speakers like the Google Nest Mini, it is particularly practical to set up the Google Assistant voice assistant beforehand. Before you start setting up, you should have the following things on hand:

  • Philips Hue lamps
  • Google Nest device compatible with Google Assistant
  • Google Home app
  • Hue Bridge (for full functionality)

You can connect to the smart lighting system either via Bluetooth or, for full functionality, via the Philips Hue control center if you have it.

Set up with Bluetooth

Philips Hue lamps can be connected to your Google Nest smart speakers via Bluetooth and then controlled by Google Assistant. Make sure that you have Bluetooth turned on in your smartphone’s settings and the Google Home app already installed. We’ll show you how this facility works.

You can also use the Hue Bridge control center to connect to the Google Nest smart speakers and then control them via Google Assistant. This is how you can set it up:

Set up Philips Hue with Hue Bridge

  1. 1

To begin, open the Google Home app again.

  2. 2

Then go to “Devices” or “Settings”.

  3. 3

Here you click on the + sign or on “Add device”.

  4. 4

Under “Set up device” you then click on “New device” to set up the Hue Bridge.

  5. 5

If you are asked for permission to control the Hue lights on the Google Home app, tap “Yes”. The app should then be connected to Philips Hue and you can use Google Assistant.

To save electricity, you can have the light on your Philips Hue lamps turn off automatically. We’ll show you how to use this smart routine in our instructions. If you want to test out even more smart lamps: We have a comparison with Philips Hue, Ikea Tradfri and many other providers for you.
