Controversial entry during the European Championship: UEFA still has something to clarify with Germany

Entry during the European Championship disputed
UEFA still has something to clarify with Germany

The European football championship is spread across the continent. A highlight of the UEFA as a tribute to the European integration. The highlight turned into a drama because of the corona pandemic. Germany, of all places, worries the tournament organizer.

Before the European Championship, the European Football Union (UEFA) is continuing to find a solution to the open question of people from England entering Germany. The tournament director Martin Kallen of the Keystone-SDA news agency is currently discussing the entry requirements “currently with the German government” in view of the coronavirus pandemic. “The German government presented us with a solution. We don’t have it on the table yet. But one thing is clear: Our goal must be that no quarantine is prescribed. This should be possible with negative tests.”

Great Britain is considered a virus variant area because of the spread of the variant Delta (B.1.617.2), which was first discovered in India. Only German nationals and people residing in Germany are currently allowed to enter the Federal Republic of Germany from these areas. Everyone has to be in quarantine for 14 days, nobody can get rid of it with a negative corona test. “That could be a problem if a team played in London and then has to travel to Munich for the quarter-finals,” said Kallen, UEFA chief organizer for the finals.

Chancellery Minister Helge Braun had recently told the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung” that the Ministry of the Interior and Health would advise “which groups of people with which protection concepts” are allowed to come to the tournament in Germany.

In the event of a corona infection of a player, according to Kallen, other rules only apply in Scotland than at the other ten venues of the EM, which begins on Friday. Usually the affected player goes into isolation, the others can continue training if the result is negative. If, on the other hand, a player or companion tests positive in Scotland, the whole team has to go into quarantine – even if everyone else tests negative.
