Controversial investor quits
Windhorst finally closes his Hertha chapter

From now on, they will finally go their separate ways: After selling his shares, the controversial investor Lars Windhorst is also resigning from the Bundesliga soccer club Hertha BSC. This officially marks the end of a turbulent era.

The Lars Windhorst chapter at Hertha BSC is finally over. The 46-year-old, who had sold his shares in Hertha BSC GmbH & Co. KGaA to the US investment company 777 Partners, resigned as a member of the association last Saturday, a spokesman for Windhorst’s company Tennor confirmed. The club also told the “Bild” newspaper: “Hertha BSC has received a letter terminating the membership of club member Lars Windhorst.”

Windhorst had invested a total of 374 million euros at Hertha since 2019 – a one-off individual investment for the Bundesliga, which the US company has now replaced. The 46-year-old’s time with the Berliners was marked by a lot of unrest and misunderstandings. Windhorst announced at the end of November after a dispute about an alleged espionage affair against former President Werner Gegenbauer that he wanted to sell his shares in 777 Partners. Windhorst always rejected the allegations in the affair.

Meanwhile, Hertha BSC announced on Wednesday that it would sell additional shares to the new investor 777 Partners. As a result of the capital increase, the Miami-based private investment company will receive 78.8 percent of the capital shares in Hertha BSC GmbH & Co. KGaA. According to this, 74.9 percent are voting shares, and it was agreed with the company that a blocking minority of 25.1 percent of the voting rights would remain with the association.

Last Saturday, Hertha announced the entry of the Americans and announced that “Triple Seven” would take over all shares previously owned by former investor Lars Windhorst and his company Tennor Holding (64.7 percent). When the new financier was officially presented, 777 CEO Josh Wander confirmed when asked that he would invest 100 million euros in the club in the coming years, but had not yet given any information on the amount of the shares.
