Again a controversial red card
BVB deserves a tragically embarrassing CL-Aus
Without Erling Haaland, Borussia Dortmund would be missing a player who is always dangerous for goals. If there are defensive mistakes, opponents like Sporting Lisbon punish them consistently. And so it is already clear before the last Champions League group match that BVB will be eliminated.
Borussia Dortmund has practically promoted itself out of the Champions League due to severe dropouts in its wobbly defense. After the 1: 3 (0: 2) at Sporting Lisbon, the Bundesliga club has no chance of making it into the second round of the premier class. As third in the table, Borussia can at least continue in the Europa League after the winter break. She couldn’t achieve more in the last group game against Besiktas Istanbul on December 7th.

First left-back Nico Schulz made a bad mistake before Pedro Goncalves made it 0-1 (30th minute), then the BVB defense did not look good again when the Portuguese international scored the second goal (39th). Pedro Porro (81st) made the decision after BVB keeper Gregor Kobel parried an unnecessary penalty from Goncalves. To make matters worse, Emre Can, who was substituted for Schulz at halftime, saw one of the first repetitions and the reactions of the BVB professionals after a controversial red card (74th) because of alleged assault. Donyell Malen’s late goal was too little (90 + 3).
For the first time in four years, BVB failed again in the preliminary round in a group that seemed feasible. And a draw in Lisbon would have been enough to have every chance of advancing. But with hair-raising mistakes on the defensive, BVB fell behind.
Without Haaland there is nothing going on in a storm
Nico Schulz struck an air hole after a long ball at the Sporting opening goal, and Goncalves accepted the gift with thanks. Schulz had only slipped into the team a few minutes before kick-off after ex-European champion Raphael Guerreiro had to pass due to muscular problems. The full-back did not contribute to safety in his first game after more than a month, at break he was replaced by Emre Can.
Marin Pongracic also had problems replacing the red-banned Mats Hummels. With the second goal conceded, the ex-Wolfsburg acted too passively, a failed attempt at clarification by Manuel Akanji again used Goncalves with a powerful shot for the second goal.
BVB had started quite well. Playing for a draw is not an option, coach Marco Rose said. Can jumps at Sporting’s provocation
In particular, Malen, who had decided the first leg with his goal, acted without luck for a long time. Shortly after the 2-0 draw, the Dutchman had a huge chance to score when he had already passed goalkeeper Antonio Adan. However, his shot was cleared on the line by Goncalo Inacio (40th). So the BVB game was quite pleasing, but often without effect. Sporting had the better chances.
In the second half, the Dortmund team increased the pressure and took full risks, which enabled Sporting counter-chances. As with Pablo Sarabia, who narrowly failed to Kobel (48th). Rose was growing impatient on the sidelines. After a good hour, the coach drew his last trump cards. The massive Steffen Tigges came into play alongside Dan-Axel Zagadou and Mahmoud Dahoud. And the Regionalliga striker had a good opportunity when his shot was blocked (68th).
After that it got heated. Sporting provoked and Can let himself be carried away to unsportsmanlike conduct, for which there was red. And it got worse: After Zagadou fouled Joao Palhinha, there were penalties, which Kobel even saved. But Porro headed the ricochet into the net. After all, Dortmund still got to goal in stoppage time by painting, but that didn’t bring any more.
