The television station TN reports that around 20 suspects were arrested by the police during the demonstrations. The demonstrations were against a controversial reform package by the ultra-liberal government led by President Javier Milei.

The controversial reform package

With his legislative initiative, Javier Milei wants to privatize several state-owned companies, among other things. Large investors should also benefit from tax breaks. Social movements and the left-wing opposition condemn the reform package as neoliberal and antisocial.

The government has already had to cut back the reform package considerably in order to gain a majority in parliament. On Wednesday evening local time, parliament approved the reform package. Argentina is currently in a deep economic crisis and has one of the highest inflation rates in the world. Javier Milei wants to get the country back on track with a radical austerity program.
