An offside decision in the second leg of the CL semi-final against Real caused a lack of understanding among Bayern.
After a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the semi-final, Real Madrid celebrated a 2-1 win at home against Bayern Munich. While the Spaniards celebrated their entry into the final, the Germans stormed the referee. The reason for Munich’s anger: Referee Szymon Marciniak from Poland had called off a Bayern attack prematurely for offside shortly before the end of the 15-minute stoppage time; the following goal by Matthijs de Ligt for the supposed equalizer did not count.
“I find it unbelievable, I can’t understand why he doesn’t let it play through, he also said: Sorry,” said the Dutchman after the game about the controversial decision DAZN. “I don’t want to say that Madrid is always lucky, but that makes the difference today,” he added.
Coach Thomas Tuchel was also very angry: “This decision is an absolute catastrophe. You have to let the action play out to the end. That’s the rule, especially because it’s so close to the goal and so borderline. The linesman made the first mistake, the referee made the second.” Thomas Müller also found clear words: “If that really wasn’t offside, that’s an incredible blunder.” Marciniak, referee of the finals of the 2022 World Cup and the Champions League last year, had acted confidently beforehand.
Ancelotti back in the CL final
As great as the anger was on Bayern’s side, Real Madrid was just as happy. The “Royal” are aiming for their 15th title in the “premier class” against Dortmund on June 1st. Carlo Ancelotti will be on the sidelines in the Champions League final for the sixth time as coach. He reached the final three times each with AC Milan and Real Madrid. He only lost the game for the pot once (2005 vs. Liverpool). He won with the Italians in 2003 and 2007 and with Real Madrid in 2014 and 2022.
As a player, Ancelotti had already reached the final of the previous Champions League competition three times. In 1984 he reached the final of the European Champions Cup with AS Roma, but lost to Liverpool. In 1989 and 1990, the now 64-year-old won the championship cup with Milan.
