Cool AMD graphics card: ketchup, cheese and cream – hobbyists show surprising alternatives to thermal pads

AMD graphics cards can also be cooled with alternatives such as ketchup, cheese or cream. A hobbyist shows which alternative cools better than many a thermal pad.

  • The hobbyist AssassinWarlord has tested alternatives to thermal pads.
  • The ketchup is said to have surpassed one or the other thermal pad in the test.
  • The cheese, on the other hand, has apparently melted and is therefore not suitable as an alternative.

There are huge coolers as an alternative for AMD graphics cards, but a hobbyist has now also looked for various alternatives to thermal paste for passive cooling.

The AMD Radeon R7 240 served as the test object. The hobbyist AssassinWarlord exposed the not very powerful GPU to various thermally conductive substances and published the results in the Computer Base forum.

A hobbyist tested these home remedies as alternatives to thermal pads.

Ketchup gives a good result

Among the alternative products, ketchup did surprisingly well. This is said to have kept the temperature at 71 degrees. According to the test, the red mass surpasses the thermal pads Arctic TP2, EC 360 Blue, EC 360 Gold and Thermal Grizzly Minus Pad 8. The temperature of these thermally conductive pads is said to have been over 71 degrees in all cases.

It is not surprising, however, that the tested cheese slice did not last long. As the hobbyist shows in photos, this has melted. Copper paste, Penaten cream and the potato also delivered a sobering result, as all three throttled due to overheating.

The toothpaste is said to have worked a little better, if not as surprisingly well, as a replacement for thermal paste. In this case, the temperature should only have risen to 90 degrees.

For significantly more powerful graphics cards such as the RX 7900 XTX, which in some cases already has an overheating problem, ketchup would not be a serious alternative despite the good result. In this case, an external giant cooler with nine fans might be more suitable.
