The eyes of the fashion world are currently on Copenhagen. What Danish fashion is all about and how the Scandi style succeeds.
Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW for short) takes place from August 9th to 12th. In addition to the fashion shows, the casual street styles from the Danish capital are particularly inspiring. When imitating, keep the following in mind:
Invest in classics
The basis of the Danish wardrobe is formed by timeless basics such as white T-shirts, oversized blazers or well-fitting jeans. They work in the office as well as in your free time. Neutral shades are recommended so that they can be used in as many different ways as possible. Designer Anine Bing demonstrates it in a black creation of her own.

In contrast to its Scandinavian neighbors, Denmark also likes to add color accents. If Feel-good outfits à la Jeanette Madsen and Thora Valdimars the reason are that the country according to the “World Happiness Report” one of the happiest in the world?
Shop consciously
The Danes make no compromises when it comes to quality. The goal is to buy clothes and accessories that last more than one season. That means: Don’t skimp on long-lasting materials such as warm cashmere or robust leather.
If you don’t have the wherewithal, you can look around in second-hand shops or flea markets. Many Danes have found coveted unique pieces and fashionable companions for life in this way. Individual and sustainable at the same time!
Dress practically
When making new purchases, the environmentally conscious Scandinavians make sure to support local brands. This saves transport routes and guarantees that the clothing meets the demands of the far north. It should be able to withstand a bike ride as well as a spontaneous downpour. That functionality and elegance do not have to be contradictory, shows model Amalie Moosgaard in a combination of turtleneck sweater, jeans and flip-flops.
In a pair of trousers from the Danish label Rains the rain stylist Pernille Teisbæk can not harm. She wears a practical low bun to go with her cozy (Danish: “hyggelig”) outfit. When it comes to hair and make-up, people in Scandinavia also like things to be uncomplicated.
About the Copenhagen Fashion Week
Copenhagen Fashion Week takes place twice a year. From August 9th to 12th, 2022, Danish and international brands will present their upcoming spring/summer collections. Among others, Ganni, Stine Goya and Cecilie Bahnsen will be there.
As a show of solidarity, the CPHFW is cooperating with the Ukrainian Fashion Week this year. TG Botanical by Tatiana Chumak and the COAT by Katya Silchenko also show their designs.
Focus on sustainability
Anyone presenting their collection at Copenhagen Fashion Week must meet 18 minimum criteria. They are part of a sustainability plan introduced in 2020. Among other things, this obliges the brands to create a follow-up concept, not to destroy unsold clothing or to use recyclable packaging.
With this, the CPH is striving for long-term change in the fashion industry: “Copenhagen Fashion Week is the cultural and commercial meeting point of the Nordic fashion industry. This gives us the responsibility and the potential to bring about significant change in the industry as a whole”, says CEO Cecilie Thorsmark on the CPHFW website.
