Microsoft presented during an event dedicated to Windows and the Surface range a new brand, Copilot + PC, which will bring together ARM laptop PCs designed for artificial intelligence.

For many months, Microsoft has put all its strength into the battle for generative artificial intelligence. After investing several billion dollars in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, the publisher introduced Copilot, its own artificial intelligence solution which is deployed across Windows 11 and Office 365 products.

Copilot also has its own touch on the latest laptop and desktop PCs, but that clearly wasn’t enough for the Redmond publisher, which is now introducing a new brand to differentiate PCs capable of delivering the experiences of artificial intelligence designed by him.

Copilot + PC: a new family of faster and more durable laptops

Copilot + PC will therefore be a new family of PCs capable of running Copilot technology, but which will also offer all of Microsoft’s AI experiences and services, such as the new Recall functionality presented on stage, or those of third-party publishers.

Among the partners highlighted on stage by Satya Nadella, the boss of Microsoft, we find the main current manufacturers. Lenovo will release two models this summer, while Dell is already announcing five laptop PCs during this year 2024. Acer will also offer a new model from its Swift range in the Copilot + PC family, and for its part, HP will soon launch two new models , the HP OmniBook X AI and the HP EliteBook Ultra AI. Samsung and ASUS were also mentioned on stage. In addition, Microsoft joins this list with two new models, the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro, which inaugurate this new family of computers.

These laptop PCs will be able to run more than 40 artificial intelligence models. Microsoft has indicated that Copilot will soon run with the GPT-4o language model, presented a few days ago by OpenAI.

Microsoft wants to switch Windows to ARM architecture again

The first models of Copilot + PC will be equipped with an ARM chip developed by Qualcomm, the Snapdragon X Elite. The publisher couldn’t help but address a small challenge to Apple, which has for several years already switched to the ARM architecture with its Apple Silicon chips. Microsoft indeed announces that the Copilot + PC machines are “ 58% faster than MacBook Air M3 » and have a full day’s autonomy, i.e. 15 hours of continuous web browsing and ” 20% more battery than a 15-inch MacBook Air M3 ”, according to the company. To do this, Microsoft engineers also reworked Windows 11 to obtain this increase in performance.

The Copilot + PC models must meet minimum technical specifications. Microsoft indicates that these computers will have to integrate at least 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB of memory and an integrated NPU (Neural Processing Unit) to process artificial intelligence tasks.

If Qualcomm is Microsoft’s preferred partner for this launch, AMD and Intel have also been cited and should offer processors ready for the Copilot + PC family, without further details at the moment.

With Copilot + PC, Microsoft seems to be making its big shift towards ARM architecture and pushing the industry to follow this path. A big challenge for the Redmond publisher, who will have to convince users and the industry to follow it, willingly or by force.
