The chairman of the Finance Committee of the National Assembly Éric Coquerel (LFI) criticized Monday the budget “not up to par” presented by the government, while identifying “room for maneuver” for the opposition during parliamentary debates.
In particular, he considered it possible to obtain maintenance of the business value added contribution (CVAE), which the government plans to phase out, as well as the introduction of a tax on “superprofits”, when a press conference.
“I am opposed to this budget,” declared Mr. Coquerel, in the wake of the presentation by the executive of the budget texts for 2023. “But everything we can win we will do, even if it is compromise with the government, because if it’s in the general interest, we’ll do it”.
In the context of the relative majority of the macronists, “I find it difficult to think that it will be all or nothing, I think that we have room for maneuver”, he explained, “the government being obliged to ‘to accept certain amendments from the opposition as soon as the opposition is united’.
Citing the case of the CVAE, he judged “not completely impossible” that the oppositions could agree “with part of the majority” to reverse its progressive abolition.
Regarding the possibility of taxing “superprofits”, Mr. Coquerel assured that the government, including the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire, had “repeatedly made overtures”, during meetings with deputies.

The Insoumis deputy castigated the planned expenditure which “is largely insufficient in the face of the ecological and social situation” and not “up to” the country’s needs. But he considered it possible for the opposition to obtain measures on the expenditure side of the budget.
“The budgetary moment that we are approaching (…) will not be the same depending on whether Emmanuel Macron decides or not by amendment to increase the legal retirement age” in the Social Security budget by an amendment, however, warned Éric Coquerel.
