Easter will again fall in the middle of the corona wave in 2021. According to the federal and state decision, what is actually the case now – may I visit my family at Easter?

Easter is just around the corner – and with it the next corona lockdown. In view of the increasing number of cases in Germany, the Prime Minister and Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed on new measures last night. It should not have been an easy federal-state meeting, negotiations lasted until the early hours of the morning on Tuesday.

The resolutions include a tough lockdown over the Easter days. The social, economic and private life should be largely shut down from April 1st to 5th, it was announced in the press conference – and thus exactly over the holidays. Maundy Thursday and Holy Saturday were even declared to be so-called “rest days”. During this time, strict contact rules should apply. But do these also apply to families?

Strict Corona rules over Easter with contact restrictions

Most people plan to visit their families at Easter. This year, however, these must at least be limited: Nationwide, only two households with a maximum of five people are allowed to meet over the holidays. If, for example, a family wants to visit their grandparents, this is legally permitted – even if they have several small children, under 14 years of age these are not included.

In some federal states, however, the contact regulations are even more stringent. In Hamburg, for example, only one household and one other person are allowed to meet over Easter. Before the holidays, you should therefore thoroughly inform yourself on the respective country website.

Nevertheless, you should think carefully about family visits this year. Because just because meetings between two households are allowed doesn’t mean they pose no risk. If you don’t want to miss out on visits, you should try to make them as safe as possible. In Germany, all citizens are entitled to a free quick test per week. This should definitely be used before the meeting. However, even a negative result does not offer 100% certainty. When visiting, it is therefore advisable to keep your distance, wear a mask and ventilate regularly – or, if the weather is suitable, go straight to the fresh air.

In general, however, the politicians in the press conference continued to appeal to the #WebeibenZuhause concept. Over the five-day Easter lockdown, this should help break the third wave in Germany.

Instead, Easter can take place differently this year – for example with a digital Easter egg search? Let yourself be inspired by our ideas for a safe Easter – with the vaccinations, real meetings could soon be within reach again.
