Some are certainly skeptical, but many Germans can hardly wait to be vaccinated against the coronavirus. You can find out about when you can expect an appointment here.

Last year everyone said for months: "Developing a vaccine and obtaining approval for it takes at least five years. If we put a lot of energy into it and pull out all the stops, with an extra helping of luck it might be one and a half years to accomplish." Then suddenly the news that came as a surprise to many of us: the vaccine is here. BioNTech / Pfizer's BNT162b2 has received approval (December 21, 2020 in the EU). And the second, mRNA-1273 from Moderna, followed just over two weeks later. Surprise, miracles happen.

To conjure up enough vaccination doses from one day to the next to supply everyone who wants it, that doesn't work in the time and world in which we live. Perhaps our descendants will succeed in the next pandemic in 2176, but for us, despite a medical masterpiece, it still means: keep your distance, stay at home, reduce contacts and do everything possible to bring the infection process under control or to keep it – during the available one In Germany, the vaccine is initially only administered to high-risk patients and nursing staff in the first phase.

Inoculated around 1.5 million cans

In order to relieve the hospitals and our health system, our government has decided to first provide those people with a vaccine who would be likely to develop a severe course if they were infected. A good 1.5 million doses were vaccinated in this country in the first four weeks according to the relevant specifications (as of January 22, 2021). So it will take about … a little longer until a large part of the population is supplied. And until it's your turn Or your mother? Or your friend with mild asthma?

Vaccination calculator tells you when it's your turn

In order to answer these questions, which are of personal interest to each of us, the two IT cracks Bogna Szyk from the Technical University of Vienna and Philip Maus from the University of Pisa have developed a tool with which we can all calculate our – approximate – individual vaccination appointment. The "Omnicalculator" evaluates your data based on the priority list published by the German government. You can try it out here.

Of course, the result must be viewed with caution: More than 200 vaccine projects are still being worked on worldwide, and further funds can be approved at any time – which would probably accelerate the vaccination process. It can also lead to unforeseen breakdowns and delays. We only know one thing for sure: In order to be able to leave the corona crisis behind us, as many people as possible must be willing to participate – both when following distance rules and when vaccinating.
