Corona case at the Formula 1 final: Schumacher colleague Mazepin is not allowed to start

Corona case at the Formula 1 final
Schumacher colleague Mazepin is not allowed to start

At the season finale of Formula 1, only 19 instead of 20 cars will roll to the starting line. Haas pilot Nikita Mazepin has tested positive for the corona virus and must therefore isolate himself. The team does not need a replacement and therefore only sends Mick Schumacher to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Formula 1 has had a corona case in the starting field for the first time in about three months: Nikita Mazepin, Mick Schumacher’s teammate at Haas, tested positive and was positive before the season finale in Abu Dhabi (Sunday, 2 p.m. / Sky and in the live ticker at ntv.de) will miss the race. Haas announced that that morning. The Russian will not be replaced, so only 19 cars take part.

Mazepin is doing well, the 22-year-old is currently asymptomatic and has gone into quarantine. Little changes on the starting line-up, Mazepin was already in last position behind Schumacher. The Russian driver is also last in the drivers’ standings, and this is where he will end the season.

Raikkonen and Hamilton have also missed races

Most recently, Alfa Romeo driver Kimi Räikkönen had missed two races in September due to positive tests, when substitute driver Robert Kubica jumped in at short notice. At the Dutch Grand Prix, Raikkonen, who will drive his 349th and last race today, tested positive on Saturday morning and was therefore only used in Friday practice in Zandvoort. The Finn also missed the Italian Grand Prix.

Last year, record world champion Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) had to skip a race because of this, but he was already the champion for the seventh time. George Russell then took over the second Mercedes for him at the Sakhir Grand Prix, and the Briton will be moving to the series winner for the 2022 season, replacing Valtteri Bottas.

Nico Hülkenberg from Aston Martin’s predecessor Racing Point was signed as a replacement twice because of positive corona tests. The German jumped in for Sergio Pérez at the two races in Great Britain, at the Grand Prix of the Eifel he traveled from the RTL studio to the Nürburgring at short notice – and at short notice sat in the car for Lance Stroll instead of being an expert.
