DFB cancels the opening game of the 3rd division spontaneously

The new season of the 3rd league is supposed to start on this Friday. But the game between relegated VfL Osnabrück and MSV Duisburg has to be canceled at short notice. A quarantine order makes this step inevitable. The 2nd Bundesliga threatens hardship.

The opening game of the 3rd division between VfL Osnabrück and MSV Duisburg is canceled. The German Football Association canceled the match planned for this Friday (7 p.m.). The governing body of the association agreed to a corresponding application from Duisburg after the responsible health department had imposed a quarantine for the team and the coaching team of the MSV. Excluded from this are recovered and fully vaccinated players, as the DFB announced.

The mandatory Covid-19 tests had positive results in three Duisburg players last week. All three professionals have been in quarantine since then. The PCR tests in the players and support staff on Wednesday yesterday gave another positive result, whereupon the Duisburg health department issued a quarantine for the team. The third division season does not begin with the duel between the traditional clubs, but with six games on Saturday at 2 p.m..

A catch-up date for the encounter has not yet been set. The MSV Duisburg has also already submitted an application to postpone the game against TSV Havelse scheduled for July 30th. The DFB wants to decide on this in the next few days. For Osnabrück, who were relegated to FC Ingolstadt in the last season, the re-promotion mission begins a week later on July 31 at 1. FC Saarbrücken, before the new on August 7 in the first round of the DFB Cup -Second division Werder Bremen guest in the stadium at the Bremer Brücke.

In the 2nd Bundesliga, a move doesn’t seem to be an issue at the moment, but SV Darmstadt 98 will have to do without a large number of players at the start against Jahn Regensburg (Saturday, 1.30 p.m.). After three corona cases – with Patric Pfeiffer, Frank Ronstadt and Braydon Manu, the tests were positive – it is still unclear how many professionals have to be in quarantine. The final decision on this will reportedly only be made on the day of the match itself.
