Mega fight shortly before the “inevitable” cancellation

The boxing match of the year has to be canceled first. World Champion Tyson Fury has reportedly tested positive for the coronavirus. He should actually face Deontay Wilder in just under two weeks. Nothing will come of it. That should also have consequences for another fight.

The world championship fight in heavyweight boxing between WBC title holder Tyson Fury from Great Britain and the American Deontay Wilder on July 24th in Las Vegas is allegedly about to be canceled. As the TV broadcaster ESPN reported, there was a corona outbreak in the Fury camp. The US sports broadcaster, which jointly owns pay-per-view rights to the fight with Fox, noted that an official decision had not yet been made, but cited unnamed sources as saying that the fight would “inevitably” be postponed . Fury himself is said to have tested positive for Covid-19.

The third meeting between the 32-year-old “Gypsy King” Fury and the three-year-old “Bronze Bomber” is on the program in Las Vegas. The 2018 first fight ended in a controversial draw after Fury went down twice. In February 2020, the Briton won again with a technical knockout in the seventh round.

Fury had actually planned a lavish unification fight against his compatriot Anthony Joshua (world champion of the associations WBA, IBF and WBO). The plans were already in place, the fight against Joshua was scheduled for August 14th, if it was to take place in Saudi Arabia. More than 150 million US dollars are said to have been worth more than 150 million US dollars to the leadership of the authoritarian kingdom, which is criticized for repeated human rights violations, and both boxers should have received half of it each for the confrontation entitled “Battle of Britain”.

In May, however, a court ruled that Fury was contractually obliged to take on Wilder a third time. He had activated a contractual clause in good time and thus secured another duel with Fury, which must take place before a possible fight with Joshua. According to ESPN, there is now a postponement to October 9th. A subsequent duel with tJoshua would probably not be possible until 2022 at the earliest.
