Corona crisis: These online industries are booming now

Many industries are currently experiencing problems with the corona virus, while others are booming – especially online. Citizens should leave the house or apartment as little as possible and so there are numerous offers online that benefit from the current situation.

Entertainment and catering

It starts with video and audio streaming services. To pass the time or distract themselves, many people use Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Spotify, Apple Music and Co. However, this creates such a large volume of data that networks across Europe are at risk of being overloaded. In order to relieve the burden, Netflix, for example, is slowing down the bit rates of its videos for 30 days, according to a report by the business magazine "Forbes". The reduced image quality should reduce the data volume by up to 25 percent. Incidentally, the use of providers for "adult entertainment" is also widespread. For example, Pornhub announced that visits to its website increased by 11.6 percent on March 17 alone.

At the same time, people don't just want to be entertained – they also have to eat and drink. The sometimes significantly increased demand for corresponding online offers meanwhile temporarily leads to delivery bottlenecks. According to a report by the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, the beverage supplier Durstexpress even had to close its shop in the meantime. Currently, because of the high demand, only the time window for deliveries has been increased, "to ensure that we can supply and supply you all in the current situation," as the dealer says.

The situation is similar with food delivery services. "The high demand entails waiting times of up to one to two weeks – the waiting times depend on the respective delivery area and are not the normal case," said a spokesman for Rewe when asked by the "Umschau", the MDR continues. The situation at food.de is similar. "The daily new registrations alone are 25 times higher than in 2019. The delivery times come under pressure due to the high demand," explains Managing Director Karsten Schaal.

Niche providers also benefit

In addition, it can be assumed that other industries will also benefit from the Corona crisis. So you can play lottery online so that you don't have to go to the kiosk around the corner. David Neidhardt, company spokesman for Lottohelden.de, speaks of a strong increase in users in recent times: "In the past few days, noticeably more users have registered with us than normal." Not surprisingly, after all, jackpots of up to 76 million euros are currently at stake.

Online fitness offers are also trendy. The German influencer Pamela Reif (23) recently reported that with her "Home Workout Challenge" she was able to record 1.9 million calls within two days. Up to 90,000 people would have been using their fitness videos at the same time.

Shopping in the times of Corona

With so much demand in all areas, even Amazon can't keep up. In the in-house blog, the mail order giant recently pointed out that there was an increase in orders, which is why stocks of popular products, especially in the household sector, are currently exhausted. "Around the clock", however, is being worked on to ensure supplies. Attention was also drawn to the deliveries, which could currently take a little longer.

"If the number of infections continues to increase, (…) the structural advantage of online trading can be assumed, that goods can be sent directly to the house and thus avoid contact with other people in brick-and-mortar shops," a spokeswoman for the shipping service Hermes said recently when asked the news agency spot on news. At the moment, however, one can "deliver nationwide unchanged and there are no significant delays or the like".

Social pages in high demand

However, nonprofit sites dealing with the corona crisis are also in high demand. To calculate gimmicks like the Corona footprint, but also very useful offers like platforms to coordinate neighborhood help.
