Margaret and Derek Firth of Manchester had been married for most of their lives. Now they died three days apart from the consequences of Corona. The two were 91 years old.

The love story of this British couple, which originated in the north of England in the 1940s, is heartbreaking. The then 14-year-old teenagers fell in love and married on May 17, 1950.

Five children were born in the years that followed. These in turn also had offspring – there are eleven grandchildren in total. Margaret and Derek lived a simple life, but they were very happy. When Margaret developed Alzheimer's disease in 2019, the entire family cared for her with great devotion. In May 2020, the platinum wedding was even celebrated in private.

Towards the end of last year Margaret lost her appetite, barely ate, and was rushed to the hospital before Christmas. Daughter Barbara believes that it was there that she contracted the virus. At the end of January, the 91-year-old was at the end of her strength, Barbara brought Derek to her with the consent of the doctors – for one last meeting.

And then my dad even overtook my mum.

The couple had never been apart for more than a few days. Shortly after his visit, Derek also fell ill. He was brought in and shared a room with his partner. Two days later Derek was dead. Margaret followed him three days later.

"If they could have chosen an ending, then they would have wished it that way. It was nice that they were together at the end," said Barbara.
