There was a corona outbreak on a cruise ship. Infected and contact persons are now in quarantine on Gran Canaria.

A corona outbreak was reported on a cruise ship. Yes, wanderlust knocks slowly but surely on the door of each of us. But news like this is what brings us back down to earth – and shows that a little patience still makes sense.

Corona: positive tests after cruise

According to RTL information, around 1,000 guests were said to have been on board the "Mein Schiff 2", which sailed comfortably through the Canary Islands. For many of them, however, the vacation came to an abrupt end when four people tested positive for the coronavirus. Now not only several guests, but also crew members should be in quarantine. The infected are said to have been isolated on the ship and taken to special quarantine accommodation in Gran Canaria. So far, they should only suffer from mild symptoms of a corona infection.

Quarantine for 24 contacts

The 24 contact persons were not allowed to go home on Friday as planned, but had to stay on the Canary Island. Despite negative test results, they are said to have been kept in special accommodations by the tour operator Tui Cruises as a precaution. The shipping company should bear the costs for this itself; in the case of those who test positive, the international health insurance will step in. According to RTL, the contacts include nine tourists and eleven employees.

The cruise ship itself is now to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. It is not known how the corona virus was originally carried onto the ship. Operations are currently already running with a reduced number of passengers. The incident shows that, despite hygiene and safety regulations, there is still a residual risk of being infected with the corona virus while traveling.
