Corona current: intensive care worker Jenny posts anger video on Instagram – video

There are shocking words with which Jenny reports in an Instagram story on her account jenny_van_lotus about her work in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Munich: "The night was really shit. I had night duty in the intensive care unit. I started at 9:00 pm yesterday That was until 7 am this morning. I thought I could go home but then I got a call and I had to go to the next hospital for another intensive care unit to help a very young lung patient who was very bad. He had to go to the heart-lung machine. "

In her work, Jenny keeps meeting younger Corona people: "Most of our patients are older, but we also have young patients. The youngest was between 20 and 30. An athlete, in good health, no previous illnesses, no smoker – ventilated in the intensive care unit."

Given the challenging work in the hospital and the suffering of her patients, it is difficult for Jenny to bear that many people are still ignoring the rules of the current exit restrictions: "This story is for those who still haven't checked it out. I look in people's insta stories that they still meet up with friends, for cooking or watching TV, so I always think: did they actually shit you in the brain? do you still have a brain?

There are reasons why you say it only with the people you live with at home and why there is this exit restriction. Even in World War II we didn't have that and it's really not fun.

Jenny especially wants to warn younger people not to take the corona virus seriously: "You always hear in the media, it mainly affects the old. Yes and no … The young people put the infection away better, but that doesn't mean that young people don't the intensive care units are coming. We do have a lot of young, ventilated patients who are really shit. However, the death rate is significantly higher among the elderly. Briefly summarized: It affects everyone, whether young or old."

Jenny ends her emotional video with an insistent appeal: "People, stay at home! You can go out and get some fresh air. But do you have to go shopping every day and get fresh rolls from the bakery? I can also plan to only get groceries every four days. But people stroll around the supermarket with an empty shopping cart because they are bored. The drugstore is full, 20 or 30 people are standing in front of the ice cream parlor and want to get a scoop of ice cream. Does it have to be? There is a curfew and that means you should stay at home as much as possible."

"Many people now want to change their behavior"

On the effects of her story on Instagram, we had a short conversation on the phone with Jenny, who does not want to give her full name to protect her patients' privacy. Here she describes how people react to her urgent appeal and also reports on the material equipment in her hospital.

Dear Jenny, your anger story about the conditions in the intensive care units and the dangers of the corona virus for young people is causing quite a stir. Do you feel that your message that people should finally stay at home has now arrived?

"Definitely, yes. I get a lot of inquiries and messages about this story. People say thank you for shaking them up with this story. They write that they weren't aware of the importance of it all before Pull together and now want to change their behavior. "

You say there are still free intensive care beds, but the hospitals are already heavily loaded – what do you think, how long can the doctors and nurses endure this load?

"There is of course the thing with the work clothes and the FFP3 masks, which is extremely exhausting. After 30 minutes you breathe through your mouth because you can no longer breathe through your nose. After 3 to 4 hours with these masks you are fix Then you take a break, have to get back in and then another 3 to 4 hours. After such a working day you can’t do anything. After five such days you’ll crawl and need time off. If this goes on for many weeks and If there is still a huge wave of infected people, the question is whether you can do it physically for several weeks, so my appeal: It is extremely important that as few people as possible become infected so that this wave does not come.

What about your protective equipment?

"We have face masks, smocks, face shields and gloves. As in all clinics, the material is rare here, we have to make sure that we don't work wastefully. Our standard suppliers no longer deliver. Our masks come from China and the USA, the material is thrown together. Of course we are afraid that at some point we will no longer get any material.

At the moment, however, we still have a very good quality of patient care in the clinics and you don't need to panic. In order to keep it that way, it is important that we prevent a large wave of contagion. So – keep your feet still for a few more weeks, take the pressure off the hospitals, be considerate and help ensure that as few people as possible get infected. "

Dear Jenny, thank you for this information and all the best for you and your colleagues!
