Corona current: Jens Spahn wants to cancel carnival

The corona pandemic threatens the next events: Health Minister Jens Spahn now wants to completely cancel the next season's carnival.

The corona virus does not stop at culture either. Major events of any kind are currently difficult to imagine as the corona pandemic progresses. Now the next festivity is about to fall victim to the crisis: Health Minister Jens Spahn wants to cancel the 2020/2021 carnival season completely.

Carnival in Corona times? Difficult to imagine

This emerges from a telephone conference of the health committee in the Bundestag, about which the "Rheinische Post" reported. Participants of the meeting had quoted Jens Spahn as follows: "I simply cannot imagine Carnival this winter, in the midst of the pandemic. It's bitter, but it is."

The health minister was himself a child prince – so he knows how important the carnival is for many people. Nevertheless, Jens Spahn is critical of the next season. After all, the number of infected people has been rising again across Germany for a few weeks. Carnival is out of the question of hygiene and distance regulations intended to curb the spread. The celebrations are known for large crowds and close contact with one another.

Incidentally, Jens Spahn should not be alone with his claim. According to the "Rheinische Post", Sebastian Schuster, the district administrator of the Rhein-Sieg district, has asked the NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet to cancel the carnival season.

On the other hand, the Bund Deutscher Karneval should feel offended. To cancel the carnival would be an "economic disaster", so BDK President Karl-Ludwig Fess to "RP Online". Nevertheless, health is the top priority – although those affected would have preferred to have discussions beforehand.

How final Jens Spahn's statement really is remains to be seen. What is certain is that the 2020/2021 Carnival will be different – like so much during the pandemic.
