For many, summer represents a glimmer of hope in the Corona crisis. But what could it look like this year? Will everything be "normal" again in summer? Virologists dare to make initial predictions.

Summer. What was that? With the German seasons, after six months of cold weather, you forget again and again what the sun feels like on your skin – and what feelings arise in us. Because we don't just associate shorts with good weather, but also a touch of freedom, vacation and light-heartedness. And to be honest, we already lost that in 2020. In short, we really need a real summer. But what are our chances this year?

A Corona summer in a new normal

Over the past few weeks, several well-known personalities have dropped their assessment of the Corona summer 2021. For many of us it represents a light at the end of the tunnel. Chancellery chief Helge Braun recently made hope in an interview with the Funke Group. In it he was "fairly certain" that we would be able to move "fairly normally" again in the summer. Normal – what a nice word, but it applies to his prognosis with reservations, because he speaks of a summer comparable to 2020. And as is well known, this brought some relaxation to the Corona situation, but we could not speak of normality.

The prognosis by Prof. Dr. Sandra Ciesek from the University Hospital Frankfurt. In an interview with RTL, the virologist was cautiously optimistic: "My hope for the summer is that we will continue to have the numbers under control, that we can accelerate the vaccinations and that everyone who wants will receive a vaccination offer by the end of the summer. " Then the risk of infection can be reduced again by meeting in the fresh air or outside areas of the catering trade.

It sounds as if meetings in parks, excursions in the fresh air and visits to restaurants and cafés could be possible again in summer 2021. But dr. Ciesek also restricts – one should continue to forego major events. Here, too, there is a little "normal" that we will have to get used to.

Virologist admonishes: hold on now!

But the virologist encourages you to persevere. It would be a shame to give up now when the goal of the Corona marathon is finally in sight. With the vaccinations, a great lever for fighting pandemics has already been found. Once a large part of the population has been vaccinated and severe disease becomes less common, Dr. Ciesek assumes "that the coronavirus will then lose its horror and one will find their way back to normal social life". Isn't that good news?

Incidentally, the same applies to travel. At Easter, politicians are currently still skeptical, but a few weeks ago the federal government gave hope that vacation from Pentecost should slowly be possible again.
