Corona current: Will schools reopen after Easter?

Schools and day-care centers in Germany have been dense for weeks. What will happen after the Easter holidays? It all depends on how the number of infections with the corona virus will develop over the Easter holidays. Afterwards, Chancellor Angela Merkel wants to consult with the state premiers and decide how to proceed.

What is already certain: There will probably not be a full start back to (school) life as we knew it before the virus. Politicians are constantly making it clear that there can only be a gradual return to everyday life. "I am sure that there will be no full start of classes in schools after the Easter holidaysAccordingly, said Heinz-Peter Meidinger, President of the Teachers 'Association, of the German Press Agency. If the politicians' decision to extend or tighten the previous measures was agreed, there would be no school openings, said Meidinger.

However: If the politicians decide to relax the lockdown measures after April 19, you could also "think of a gradual return to school".

The older students first?

What could such a gradual loosening look like? For example, a staggered return of the students is conceivable – starting with the final classes because of the exams. At the end of March, the state ministers of culture decided that the school-leaving exams in Germany should be carried out despite the corona crisis.

Lessons with protective masks?

However, schools would probably have to do less with fewer staff. Meidinger believes that special protection for high-risk groups among students and teachers makes sense. "These people should not be obliged to attend class and consider special regulations."

Group divisions are also conceivable in order to be able to maintain a higher safety distance, as well as the obligation to wear simple respiratory masks, which would then have to be provided.
