The corona measures will be significantly relaxed in Great Britain from Monday. Prime Minister Boris Johnson (56) is even raising hopes that all restrictions could be lifted by June 21.
That would make the corona nightmare on the island history. At least if the corona numbers remain low as they have been recently. From Monday, for the first time since last autumn, two households can meet under one roof again. So far, there have only been a few exceptions, for example with babysitters or people in a steady relationship.
“Sensible Hugs”
With the relaxation, one-night stands will also be possible again, which were prohibited due to the restrictions during the second Corona wave: overnight visits are officially allowed again. Johnson is still cautious with his wording and gives the green light for “sensible hugs” among close friends and family members.
Bars and restaurants will also be able to serve their guests indoors again from Monday. Social distancing, however, remains in place in the public sector for the time being.
Heated debate about the Indian variant
However, the Prime Minister is confident that social distancing can also be abolished on June 21st. With the easing of the corona risk level and the expressed willingness to take further opening steps, Johnson has also triggered a heated debate: Because of the spread of the Indian Corona variant in Great Britain, some experts are calling for slower easing.
The sub-variant B.1617.2 now dominates in five of the six areas, where the highest increase in new infections was recently registered, as reported by the newspaper “The Telegraph”. There are more than 1,700 cases nationwide, three times more than the National Health Service (NHS) registered in the previous week.
Johnson is also “concerned” about this and, despite the optimistic mood, does not want to rule out anything. Also up for debate is whether to postpone the lifting of all corona restrictions as of June 21 or to leave some measures in effect beyond this date. (noo)
