Sweden has taken the sad peak in the number of new infections in the European Corona comparison. As emerged from the figures from the EU health authority ECDC, which were updated on Thursday, the Scandinavian country with its highly regarded special route had a 14-day incidence of 577 per 100,000 inhabitants in the most recent comparison period.
This is the highest value of all countries in the European Economic Area, which includes the 27 EU states as well as Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Close behind are Lithuania (563), Cyprus (522) and the Netherlands (483). Germany is in the list with a value of almost 208 in the middle. The island states Iceland (18) and Malta (25) as well as Portugal (48) and Finland (53) have the lowest numbers.
Sweden: Lots of infections, few deaths
The Stockholm-based ECDC always refers in its updated Thursday numbers to the detected new infections of the two previous weeks, this time to the period from May 3 to 16. They are recorded from Monday to Wednesday. This means that the latest national numbers will have changed by the respective Thursday.
Despite the high incidence, the number of deaths associated with corona infections in Sweden is relatively low in an EEA comparison of 12 per 1,000,000 inhabitants. Calculated for the population, it is only about a third of the German value (35). (cat / SDA)
