Corona isolation: the best tips for hair cutting and styling

As part of the Corona measures, hairdressing salons in Germany must remain closed since March 22. Home visits are also not allowed due to the ban on contacts. Of course, one or the other is now worried about his hairstyle – after all, many working people have to present themselves to their colleagues from their home office in video conferences every day. The idea of simply cutting your hair yourself has surely come to some people. With these tricks, the styling works at home.

One thing should be clear to everyone: with an untrained hand, it is more advisable to keep your fingers off the scissors. Particularly drastic changes, such as step or short haircuts, pose a high risk, since mishaps are noticed quickly.

Side parting if the bangs are too long

At the latest when thin fringes obstruct the view, it is clear: the pony should be cut again urgently. But that can be tricky. If you don't want to use scissors yourself, you can use a simple styling trick: pull a side parting with a pen or comb, then you won't notice the overgrowth. Or you can take the bangs back with a headband, hair clips or a bandana.

Cut bangs

The pony section can be divided cleanly with a comb. So that the strands on the sides do not fall into the face and interfere with the cutting, it is best to stick them back with clips, or simply do a braid if the hair is long enough for it. If you want to cut a straight bangs, simply take a narrow strand from the middle between your index and middle fingers and cut the hair below the fingers. To avoid hard edges, it is recommended to fringe the strands from below. Prepare gradually on all sides.

When the long mane is in the way

Long hair has one major advantage: it is ideal for braiding hairstyles. Fortunately, the internet is full of tutorials and video tutorials that take you step-by-step into the art of fishtail, double Dutch, and milkmaid looks. Since this requires a lot of concentration at the beginning, braiding is also suitable as a mindfulness exercise, at the same time you train fine motor skills. It works best when the hair is somewhat greasy, which gives the braid a better hold.

Alternatively, the braid-cutting method can help: Take the damp hair into a ponytail at the back of the head and fix it at regular intervals with hair ties until there is only as much left at the lower end as is to be cut away. Press the end of the braid flat and make a straight cut with the hair scissors. However, it is ideal if someone from the household can use the scissors.

Shorten tips yourself

In the event that the sight of the tips of the hair becomes unbearable, the following applies: It is best to cut hair in a dry state, use proper hair-cutting scissors and do not cut off more than a few centimeters. To do this, pull a middle parting from the hairline to the neck and split the hair in half. Then lay the hair forward over your shoulders and decide for one side: take the hair of the desired length between the index and middle fingers and cut the tips below the fingers – cut by cut so that there are no unsightly edges. Then repeat the process on the other side. But be careful: It is better to approach the desired length piece by piece than possibly taking too much away.

A trick is recommended for those who only want to remove split ends: the Zwirbel method. To do this, it is best to take a strand about three centimeters thick and twist it together into a thin braid; Carefully cut off the broken tips that stick out.

Beard trimming made easy

Men's hair also needs to be taken care of and cared for. If you have a full beard and want to trim it, you can either do it with a beard trimmer or scissors. Set the trimmer to the greatest cutting length and slowly advance to the desired length. With long beards, it is also useful to comb them before cutting to loosen possible knots. With the scissors you can either work freehand or orient yourself on a beard comb. Drive it through the beard and stop at the desired length. Hair that protrudes beyond the comb may fall victim to the scissors. The recommendation also applies here: It is better to slowly approach the desired length.

Trim mustache

The same applies to mustaches: it is better not to take too much length away. Either change the trimmer setting from short to long or use the scissors straight away: comb the whiskers down and cut straight just before the upper lip. You can hardly go wrong if you want the beard to go off completely. Drive with the trimmer in the direction of growth and let the hair trickle.

Clearly: a full beard needs different care than a stubble beard. While the former only needs tuition from time to time, the stubble beard requires regular trimming, about every two to three days. The typical length is between 0.5 and 5 millimeters. It is best to trim the beard against its direction of growth, starting at the chin. To do this, slowly drive over your neck and work your way to the jaw and finally to the sideburns, then dedicate yourself to the upper lip. For defined edges, it is worth using a wet razor afterwards.
