After the summer vacation, Kosovars and Albanians suddenly became the focus of the Corona debate. In particular, holiday returnees from the Balkans caused a new wave of corona and brought the hospitals to the attack. People of Albanian origin defended themselves against the criticism, while others called on their compatriots to be vaccinated.
The latest corona survey by the Sotomo research center, which it carried out on behalf of the SRG, now shows how people are willing to vaccinate in Switzerland – for the first time by country of origin or migration background.
And here it is confirmed: Southern Europeans are particularly skeptical of vaccinations. Only 58 percent of those questioned over the age of 15 have been vaccinated at least once. 37 percent do not want to be vaccinated, the rest are still waiting.
The North Americans with 95 who have been vaccinated at least once can be found as real vaccination fans at the top. The native Swiss, on the other hand, are in the midfield – after all, 78 percent of those over the age of 15 have piked at least once.
Half SVP base shies away from spades
Even if the southern Europeans are not vaccinated, another group clearly outdoes them in terms of unwillingness to vaccinate. Almost half of the SVP sympathizers want to refuse the vaccination: 48 percent! Almost the same number are vaccinated at least once. The rest is still waiting. “The science skepticism, which is rather widespread in the national conservative milieus, plays an important role”, write the Sotomo researchers on the SVPs’ skepticism about vaccinations.
The supporters of the other parties are practically vaccinated. Skepticism is still greatest among the Greens, where 12 percent do not want to be vaccinated. The green liberals, on the other hand, are the most willing to vaccinate, where only every 25th person does without the spades.
A rift is also opening up between the sexes. If four out of five men are vaccinated at least once, it is only 70 percent for women. 27 percent of women reject the vaccination, compared to only 17 percent of men.
The younger the respondents, the more unwilling to vaccinate, the more they are older. One in three 15- to 24-year-olds does not want to be vaccinated, with over 75-year-olds only a good thirteenth refuses to have the spades. And if you look at household income, it shows that the more someone earns, the more likely they are to be vaccinated.
Vaccination week should provide a boost
In Switzerland as a whole, 69 percent have been vaccinated twice and 5 percent once, according to the survey. 22 percent want to forego vaccination, only 3 percent are waiting.
It is becoming more and more difficult to convince those who do not want to vaccinate to vaccinate. “In order to further increase the vaccination rate, people must now be won over who had already spoken out against the vaccination in principle,” the Sotomo researchers write in their report.
In any case, the federal government and the cantons want to provide another boost in November: with a national vaccination week from November 8th to 14th. And maybe one or the other can also be convinced by the again significantly increasing corona numbers.
