Corona record – 900,000 Brits could spend Christmas in self-isolation

Almost 900,000 people could be forced to spend Christmas Day in self-isolation after being infected with Covid-19 in the last ten days, as an analysis of the “Dailymail” shows. A total of 766,000 people across the UK have tested positive for the virus since December 16, the deadline for leaving quarantine on time.

And current trends indicate that 125,000 more Britons will test positive on Friday, as the highly contagious Omicron variant is driving the number of cases to a record high. In the last two days, more than 100,000 new infections were registered every day. In Scotland, people who do not have the virus but have had close contact with an infected person must also be quarantined.

Social media users report that they only have mild symptoms, such as a runny nose. Therefore, they do not understand why they should forego the festivities in the presence of the family. Some even write that even a positive test will not prevent them from celebrating with loved ones.

But there is also good news for almost 250,000 people. Those who tested positive for Covid between December 16 and 18 in England may be able to exit quarantine in time for the holidays. Because so that the damage to the economy and the vital services such as the NHS, the national health system of Great Britain is not too great, people can be released from isolation after just seven days. Several negative corona tests are required.

Nevertheless, there is a certain fear of a system collapse in Great Britain. A record of 119,789 corona infections was registered on Thursday. The absence of employees in the health system tripled in December. The transport companies in London are also currently missing 500 people due to illness.
