Corona vaccination pass for air travel: 20 airlines start pilot project

The “IATA Travel Pass“is a smartphone app that travelers can use to save and manage certifications for COVID-19 tests or vaccinations. The app is now available available for Android, the iOS version has been available in the App Store for a few weeks.

The “IATA Travel Pass” is intended to facilitate air travel under the conditions of the corona pandemic and to avoid quarantines as far as possible. The association assures that the data should remain under the control of the passengers.

IATA had the app developed and has already tested it with pilots from British Airways parent IAG. Deutsche Lufthansa is also involved in the project, according to its own information, but is still examining the introduction for certain groups of passengers.

In addition, passengers can use the app to find out about the current Corona entry and health regulations in their travel destinations.

IATA boss De Juniac recently welcomed the EU plans for a standardized digital European vaccination card. This should then also be stored in the “IATA passport” app.

A first test run of the “IATA Travel Pass” took place at Singapore Airlines in March. With immediate effect, a negative PCR test result proven by the IATA travel pass should be accepted when entering Singapore.

The airline Etihad plans to initially offer the IATA pass on selected flights from Abu Dhabi in the first quarter of this year. Emirates announced that passengers can use the app to submit their corona test results before they depart Dubai.

The Spanish low-cost airline Vueling is also currently running a pilot project to introduce the IATA Travel Pass app.

Basically, IATA wants to make the technology available to all airlines. For travelers without a mobile phone, paper-based alternatives should also be available in future.
