After politicians recommended vaccinations for 12 to 17 year olds in the middle of the year without a recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission, pediatricians are now warning against putting the same pressure on families with children under 12 years of age.

The EU approval process for the corona vaccine for children aged five and over has already started. The president of the professional association of paediatricians, Thomas Fischbach, assumes that the vaccine from Biontech / Pfizer will soon be approved, he told the “Osnabrücker Zeitung”.

Corona vaccinations for children: Doctors warn against too much pressure on families

“As an association, we urgently recommend waiting for the recommendation of the Standing Vaccination Commission.” Only they could clarify exactly for whom a child vaccine could really be used sensibly, explained Fischbach.

The procedure in the summer that Health Minister Jens Spahn and other politicians demanded vaccinations for children between 12 and 17 years without the recommendation of the STIKO, he described as “excessive and counterproductive”.

The politicians should hold back with their demands

It has led to a lot of confusion among patients, families and doctors’ offices. “That is why Mr Spahn should hold back as much as possible,” said Fischbach. “He lacks the expertise.” The pediatricians would also not comment on topics that they do not understand anything about.

It remains to be seen whether the politicians will accept these demands in the face of the fourth wave. After the numbers remained stable over a longer period of time, they have increased significantly in the past few days. The current seven-day incidence is 80.4 (as of October 20, 2021), the highest value in a month. That is 43 percent more new infections than in the week before, according to “Die Zeit”.
