Corona virus in southern Europe: does a vacation booking still make sense now?

The summer vacation seemed saved despite the Corona crisis. But now the infection numbers are rising in southern Europe. What does this mean for those willing to travel?

The Corona crisis has upset millions of Germans' travel plans. The summer vacation seemed to be secured thanks to relaxed travel warnings. Tourists were allowed to travel south again. But now popular travel destinations such as Bulgaria, Greece, Croatia and Spain are reporting an increase in the number of infections. Does it make sense to book a vacation now?

In Bulgaria, which attracts numerous tourists due to the golden sands and the sunny beach, a day record was recently set with over 180 new Corona cases. Austria has therefore expressed a high security risk. "Persistent restrictions in air and travel traffic as well as extensive restrictions in public life can be expected until further notice," says the homepage of the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs.

The number of Corona cases has also been increasing in Croatia for some time. The herds of infection appear to be limited to the capital city of Zagreb and the border region with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Infected tourists are worried in Greece, the majority of whom come from Serbia. Much of the new infections were registered on the border with Bulgaria. At the beginning of July there were as many new infections in Spain as there have not been since the end of May. In some regions, such as Catalonia, the measures have therefore been tightened again.

The Federal Foreign Office has not issued a Covid 19 travel warning for any of the countries concerned. The corresponding website says: "If a country exceeds the number of newly infected people in relation to the population of fewer than 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants cumulatively in the last 7 days, the travel warning remains or is issued again."

So far there have been relatively moderate increases within the individual countries. There is currently no cause for concern. However, this can change quickly and lead to new lockdowns. For the holiday booking, the following still applies: caution is better than forbearance. Before booking, check whether the Federal Foreign Office has issued a travel warning for your holiday destination. Also note the entry and thus possible quarantine restrictions for your travel destination and for re-entry to Germany.
