Corona warning app: operation only until May 2023
The Corona warning app is installed on around 45 million smartphones in Germany. It not only saved vaccination certificates, but also warns users if they have been near people infected with Corona. It is uncertain whether this will remain the case in the future.
According to information from the mirror, Health Minister Karl Lauterbach wants the extend existing contracts “for the last time until May 31, 2023”.. The app will be operated and developed by a consortium made up of Deutsche Telekom and SAP, while administration will be carried out by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), which in turn reports to the Ministry of Health.
According to the wording of the ministry, the future of the Corona warning app from June 1, 2023 is uncertain. For continued operation, new contracts would have to be drawn up and a new tender would have to be initiated. Depending on the pandemic situation, the decision could be made that the app is no longer needed. So far, development and operation have cost around 150 million euros.

Deutsche Telekom and SAP have campaigned in vain for the Add new functionality to the app. The expansion to a health app in which e-prescriptions and the electronic patient file (ePA) could be integrated was under discussion.
