Corona warning app brings important improvement – only one thing bothers

The official federal corona warning app to contain the corona pandemic has received another update. iPhone users can update to Version 2.16.1 Download it from the App Store now, for Android users it may take a few days before the update is available from the Play Store.

The reason for the Android delay is a staggered release in the Google Play Store. “The app will be made available to users on a staggered basis in order to be able to react immediately to ad-hoc irregularities in functionality with troubleshooting,” says the RKI.

Version 2.16: The Corona-Warn-App can do this now

With the Version 2.16 users can now see their current status proof in the upper right corner of their certificate and thus also which rule(s) their existing certificates meet. There are four different ways to do this: 3G, 3G+, 2G and 2G+.

According to the decision of the federal and state health ministers, vaccinated or recovered people who have received a booster vaccination do not currently have to submit a current test for a 2G-Plus regulation. The CWA currently takes this regulation into account in the status display not yet. This means that if you have a vaccination or recovery certificate and a certificate of the booster vaccination, it does not yet show the 2G+ status.

The project team is already working on ensuring that the CWA includes certificates from booster vaccinations accordingly in the future.

This is also new: Users who have stored a valid vaccination or recovery certificate plus a valid test certificate in the app are now shown a combined view.

Users can then use the switch to switch between the QR code of the “2G certificate” (proof of vaccination or recovery) and that of the test certificate in order to provide 2G+ proof quickly and easily. Both QR codes must be verified on-site using the CovPassCheck app along with ID card presentation if 2G+ proof is required.

There is no official roadmap from the developers, but suggestions and requests for future versions can be viewed on the developer platform GitHub and there are a few very interesting things, such as a reminder about upcoming vaccinations or protection against misuse when scanning of certificates.

In the “in progress” workflow there is another specific suggestion that makes sense given the current chaos of corona rules. Local guidelines or the rules applicable in each federal state could possibly be included in the Corona-Warn-App in the future and thus offer a simple overview. A similar function is already available with the free “May I do that?” app.
