Corona warning app: How many users does the German app have?

The German Corona warning app was published two weeks ago. So many people have downloaded the program so far.

The federal government's Corona Warning app has been in use for just over two weeks. The app is designed to inform users whether they have come into contact with infected people and thereby help to break the chain of infection faster. Since the download of the free program is voluntary, the question arises as to how many citizens actually have the iOS and Android app installed.

According to current figures from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the app has been downloaded a total of around 14.4 million times. According to the Federal Statistical Office, around 83.2 million people were living in Germany at the end of 2019. If you calculate with this information, a little more than 17 percent of citizens have downloaded the Corona warning app.

Who are the users?

According to information from ZDF, there is a relatively high number of iOS users among the users of the app. A few days after the app was released, the broadcaster explained that about half of all downloads were for Apple users. That was surprising, as Linus Neumann from Chaos Computer Club told the broadcaster at the time: "You would actually expect a higher share of Android downloads due to the much higher market share."

How many users have actually reported an infection or have been warned is not known. It is not readily possible to collect data because the contacts are not stored centrally for data protection reasons. According to ZDF, it is estimated that after two weeks about 100 citizens have reported that they are infected.
