Meghan Markle and her children will be the big absentees at the coronation of King Charles III, Saturday, May 6. And rare are the British to regret the absence of the king’s daughter-in-law at the ceremony. The youngest son of Charles, Harry, will make the trip to the abbey and his actions, at a distance from the front rows, will be scrutinized.

He should however be absent from the balcony, unless there is a gesture of reconciliation between the family and the prince, exiled since 2020 in California and who has since fired red balls at royalty, especially at his brother William and his mother-in-law Camilla.

“I think it’s a blessing that she’s not here”

“It’s sad without Meghan. I think she should have been the star.” This grandmother, crossed in Finsbury, is one of the few to regret the absence of Meghan Markle at the ceremony. Only her husband, Prince Harry, will be seated in Westminster Abbey on Saturday to attend his father’s coronation. And for Pak, who lives in London, his presence is quite enough. “He did well to come back. It’s the big day for his father. I can’t say that Meghan did anything wrong, but I think that as an actress, she is not natural”, says this fan of the royal family.

The British can not stand to see the Sussexes criticize the royal family at length of interviews. For Linda, a staunch royalist, it’s all Meghan’s fault, not Harry’s: “I think it’s a blessing that she’s not here. It’s really disappointing and a shame for Harry because it’s a good man, very funny and he was loyal. You know, he was probably manipulated”.

According to the tabloids, Harry could very quickly return to California to join Meghan and their children. Their son Archie turns four today, the day of his grandfather’s coronation, which he will therefore not attend.

A prince who rarely returns home

“Buckingham Palace is pleased to confirm that the Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation at Westminster Abbey on May 6,” the palace wrote in a statement, released in April. But he adds that “the Duchess of Sussex will stay in California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet”. The response of the “Sussex”, who left to live in the United States in 2020, had been particularly awaited since the beginning of March, when it was announced that they were invited to the ceremony.

Harry and Meghan have only returned to the UK on rare occasions since leaving in 2020, including to attend Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September. The Duke of Sussex had traveled alone for the funeral of his grandfather Prince Philip in 2021, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The second heir to the throne made a final appearance on British soil at the end of March in London at a hearing against the publisher of the DailyMailaccused by several celebrities of illegally gathering information.
