Coronation project – Swiss artist conjures up light installation for Charles III. – News

Gerry Hofstetter created a light work of art on the occasion of the coronation of the monarch. The subject remains secret for the time being.

Whether in the clouds, on houses or on stony mountain faces – in the dark, the works of light artist Gerry Hofstetter begin to shine. The 61-year-old recently lit up the sky in the Bernese Oberland for a royal occasion. Hofstetter created in honor of the coronation of Charles III. a light projection in the clouds above the Eiger.

The exact subject for the coronation initially remains secret, but not his thoughts on the royal project. “It had to be a symbolic story,” reveals Hofstetter. “Charles meets his parents, gets the scepter and travels back to England for the coronation. That’s the idea.”

Will the coronation of Charles III. broadcast on TV?

SRF broadcasts the coronation of King Charles III. on Saturday, May 6, 2023, from 10:30 a.m. in a G&G Royal special.

With his latest work of art, Gerry Hofstetter is bringing Queen Elizabeth II, who died last September, to a certain extent back to life. That the mother of King Charles III. plays an important role in the projection does not give the artist anything to think about. According to Hofstetter, it is quite legitimate for the parents to hand over the scepter to the monarch and thus appear again in the installation.

A Swiss for Great Britain

All of Hofstetter’s royal lighting projects were created in cooperation with the British Embassy in Bern. Communications director Camilla Chalmers came across the artist last year while researching the Queen’s jubilee. She was immediately fascinated by his work. “Light symbolizes life and joy,” explains the London native. “It was just wonderful to be able to combine the British monarchy as an institution with the Bernese Oberland as a Swiss landmark.”

“Faces & Stories” shows what the light project for the coronation looks like on Friday at 6:35 p.m. on SRF 1.
