March 24 (Reuters) – The European Medicines Agency (EMA) on Thursday authorized the use of AstraZeneca’s antibody injection for the prevention of COVID-19 infections in adults and adolescents over 12 years.

The treatment is for adults whose immune systems are too weak to respond to vaccines and offers a new tool to ease the burden of the pandemic on health systems. Coronavirus infections in Europe, where the adult vaccination rate is stagnating at just over 83%, are up sharply again this month.

While vaccines require an intact immune system to develop antibodies and infection-fighting cells, Evusheld contains lab-made antibodies designed to stay in the body for months to contain the virus in the event of an infection. .

The EMA’s recommendation is expected to be quickly confirmed by the European Commission, which has the final say on market access, Reuters reported on Wednesday. (Report Manas Mishra in Bangalore; French version Federica Mileo, edited by Jean-Michel Bélot)
