BERLIN (Reuters) – Germany plans to spend up to 2.861 billion euros to ensure that manufacturers of coronavirus vaccines have enough production capacity until 2029 to meet the country’s needs in case of a new outbreak, the economy ministry said.

The German government on Wednesday approved draft contracts with BioNTech, CureVac/GSK, Wacker/CordenPharma, Celonic and IDT, the ministry said in a statement.

“We have learned the lessons from the coronavirus pandemic and the initial vaccine shortage: With these contracts, we ensure the production and supply of vaccines for years to come and take precautions for German citizens,” said Economy Minister Robert Habeck.

The contracts give the government rights to access companies’ production capacities if the coronavirus pandemic persists or if a new pandemic breaks out.

They also include provisions specifying the level of supply and production of vaccines for the State.
