ATHENS – Greece on Thursday recorded a record 35,580 coronavirus infections, as the highly contagious Omicron variant becomes dominant in the country, forcing authorities to adopt new restrictive measures for the New Year’s holidays.

This is the third consecutive record for daily cases, with infections having more than tripled since the start of the week. According to Deputy Health Minister Mina Gaga, more than 60% of new cases are linked to the Omicron variant.

The Minister of Health on Wednesday announced new restrictions in the hotel and restaurant sectors, advancing measures planned for early January.

From this Thursday evening, bars, nightclubs and restaurants will close at midnight, with no customers standing and no music, with the exception of New Years Eve when they can stay open until 2 a.m.

The government on Thursday pledged aid for employees and musicians prevented from working in January due to the new restrictions.
