The coronavirus continues to mutate. “AY.3” is on the advance in the USA, Great Britain and Israel. This is a sub-variant of the well-known Delta variant, writes the “Mirrors”.
Since this form of the virus has only been spreading for a few weeks, the number of cases is still low. Still, AY.3 could be more contagious than Delta, the researchers warn. This is what the available data would suggest. “These are definitely the first clear signs of a potentially worrying variant in a while,” wrote Christina Pagel, a professor at University College London, on Twitter.
45 percent of the cases in Mississippi
In England the numbers are slowly increasing, but the new sub-variant may still replace the original Delta variant.
In the US states of Missouri and Mississippi, the share of AY.3 in infections is already 43 and 45 percent. “We have seen this before and should therefore start preparing.” In the USA, the variant first appeared in April.
In Israel, too, AY.3 is of concern to the skilled workers. “It looks very, very virulent in terms of infection rate, and it looks like she is developing relative resistance to the vaccine,” Asher Shalmon, head of the international relations unit, told a parliamentary committee.
The World Health Organization currently counts four particularly worrying variants of the coronavirus. These include Alpha, which first appeared in the UK, Beta, which came from South Africa, Gamma, which was first registered in Brazil, and the Indian Delta and its sub-variants. (man)
