“Correspondingly good under the circumstances”: Nagelsmann comments on the corona infection

“Correspondingly good”
Nagelsmann comments on the corona infection

Julian Nagelsmann reports from quarantine after his corona infection. How long the coach will be out is not yet clear. What is certain is that Nagelsmann will miss the duel against his ex-club at the weekend.

Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann is doing, according to his own statement, “according to the circumstances,” despite his corona infection. The 34-year-old football teacher announced this on Twitter. “Thank you for all well-being. I am very proud of the team, my entire coaching team and the team behind the team! You did a great job yesterday and represented me in the best possible way,” wrote Nagelsmann. He put a thumbs-up emoticon on his mail, including a masked selfie.

Nagelsmann missed his team’s 4-0 victory in the Champions League game at Benfica on Wednesday evening. The reason for this was initially given by the club as a flu-like infection. The positive corona test came on Thursday.

The Bavarians pointed out that Nagelsmann had “complete” vaccination protection. He did not travel to Munich with the team, but separately in an ambulance flight. After his return, he went into domestic isolation, FC Bayern announced. Nagelsmann will continue to miss the Munich team for the time being, the exact duration of his failure cannot yet be predicted. In Lisbon he was primarily represented by assistant coach Dino Toppmöller.

Not there against the ex-club

Bayern Munich had to fall back on an ambulance pilot in February. At that time, national player Thomas Müller had to be transported back to Germany from the Club World Cup in Qatar after a positive corona test. Photos showed Müller leaving the plane in a white protective suit. The use had been criticized by SPD health politician Karl Lauterbach. He referred to the special role of football in the midst of the pandemic.

In February Bavaria was plagued by numerous corona cases. With Leon Goretzka, Javi Martinez, Müller and Benjamin Pavard, four of the record champions’ players were infected within a very short time. Bayern Munich last complained about a corona case in July 2021. World champion Corentin Tolisso tested positive and went into domestic isolation in his native France.

With a view to Nagelsmann’s corona infection, Max Eberl warned German professional football to be careful in the pandemic despite vaccinations. “We continue to adhere to all Corona rules. But despite a high vaccination rate, you are not immune that someone will be infected,” said the sports director of Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach. “The Julian Nagelsmann case, which is double vaccinated, should be a warning to us that we should continue to exercise caution.” On Saturday (3.30 p.m. / Sky) is the next competitive game for Bayern Munich. Then it goes in the Bundesliga against Nagelsmann’s first professional club TSG Hoffenheim.
