  • Argentine Vice President Cristina Kirchner has been sentenced to six years in prison in a corruption trial.
  • The court found the 69-year-old guilty of misappropriation of public funds. The judges also banned her from holding public office for life.
  • However, the ex-president (2007-2015) can still appeal against the first-instance verdict.

Fernandez de Kirchner enjoys immunity because of her public office. Therefore, she does not face imminent arrest. She is also expected to appeal the verdict. As a result, it could be years before a final judgment is reached.

The former head of state was accused of embezzling public funds and forming a criminal organization. Prosecutors asked for 12 years in prison and a lifetime ban from public office.

Corruption allegations during tenure

Kirchner rejected the allegations and accused the judiciary of investigating them for political reasons. «When I first spoke here, I said that the court bends the law for political reasons. I think I was being generous back then. In reality, it’s a real firing squad,” she said in her closing speech in the process.

Fernandez de Kirchner served two terms as President between 2007 and 2015 and has a large following. Already during her presidency she had been accused of corruption in the awarding of public contracts.

The 69-year-old Cristina Kirchner and her late husband, ex-president Néstor Kirchner (in office from 2003 to 2007), are said to have procured public contracts for a friendly contractor without a tender.

According to the public prosecutor’s office, his company received 80 percent of all public road construction contracts in Kirchner’s home region of Santa Cruz. Part of the excessive construction costs later flowed back to the couple.
