Forget Romy Schneider’s delicate, radiant and idealized Sissi. Make way for a raw and realistic portrait of Corsage. The director Marie Kreutzer leaves aside the illustration of the perfect empress. She prefers a rougher, nonchalant and disenchanted heroine who constantly has to face judgments.
Attacked on her weight and her age, she stands up against oppression – what better title than Corsage to refer to the injunctions made to women for millennia? As a sign of rebellion, this Sissi disobeys, smokes, insults and feigns discomfort, like a teenager at war with authority.
In this new version, Vicky Krieps slips under the skin of the Empress and confirms her great talent. She transforms a character known to all and revisited many times to offer another look, which fits perfectly into our time.
