This decision was taken by the hydraulic monitoring committee of Corse-du-Sud, which brings together the State, the community of Corsica, the mayors and the socio-professionals, specified the prefecture. The restrictions on the use of water, applicable from Saturday and at least until July 12, will concern both private owners and public authorities. In particular, it will be prohibited, between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., to wash vehicles, drain or fill swimming pools and water public and private green spaces.

The ban also concerns the watering of sports grounds, the irrigation of market garden crops or the washing of traffic lanes. “Everyone is asked to demonstrate good citizenship and responsibility to ensure the proper implementation of these measures.“, called the prefecture. Fines of up to 1500 euros are provided for offenders.

40% precipitation deficit

This shift to drought alert was decided after the observation of a “rapid deterioration of the situation over the past six weeks“, with “a precipitation deficit of 40% compared to the average expected for the month of May», «very high temperatures reaching +4 degrees compared to seasonal norms over the first 15 days of June” and “the very severe dryness of the soils in the coastal sectors, which is also worsening in the interior of the island“, as the prefecture had indicated on Monday.

The level of groundwater in the south of the island and the reservoirs of the EDF dams remain above the alert thresholds“, she had however specified, judging them “subject to above-average withdrawals for this time of year due to rapidly increasing water consumption“.

The month of May wasexceptionally warm” in Corsica, had underlined at the beginning of June Météo-France, by specifying that it was “second hottest May in 50 years“, at 2.3 degrees above normal.
