A man was killed Thursday in Haute-Corse during his arrest as part of a judicial investigation opened in particular for “organized gang theft” and the gendarme responsible for the shooting was placed in police custody, indicated the prosecutor of Bastia.

The facts took place around 6:00 a.m. at the time of an operation carried out by the gendarmes in Poggio d’Oletta, a village located 20 km south of Bastia, “on a rogatory commission from an investigating judge (.. ) of Ajaccio of the heads of concealment of theft, criminal association and organized gang thefts”, specified Jean-Philippe Navarre in a press release.

An open investigation

“One of the people targeted as part of the investigation was injured by bullets following gunfire, the circumstances of which remain undetermined at this stage,” adds the prosecutor, specifying that this operation was aimed at “the arrest of several people in the departments of Corse-du-Sud and Haute-Corse”.

“Despite the intervention of the emergency services, the victim, otherwise unfavorably known to the judicial authorities for having already been convicted on several occasions, died as a result of his injuries and the soldier responsible for the acts was placed in custody on sight of the charge of intentional homicide by a person holding public authority.”

An investigation was opened and entrusted to the services of the interdepartmental direction of the national police (DIPN) of Haute-Corse and the general inspection of the gendarmerie (IGGN), specified the magistrate.
