On Tuesday, the autonomist president of the executive council of Corsica, Gilles Simeoni, spoke with Gérald Darmanin and transmitted the minister’s expectations to the conference of presidents on Wednesday, he confirmed to AFP.

A desire to build a status of autonomy

“We remain determined to succeed in building both a status of autonomy and a global political solution,” added Gilles Simeoni. “Before this deadline” at the end of February, the conference of presidents indicates that it wants to present “the results of its work to the Corsican Assembly and to the various elected officials” participating in discussions with the State, “before transmitting them to the minister” and to President Macron.

She will also propose to the minister to work, “from this material, within the framework of an effective and shared method” involving “all elected officials”, on “the formalization of the constitutional revision text concerning the status of autonomy of Corsica.

She also “took note” of the fact that Minister Darmanin “confirmed the government’s intention to submit the draft constitutional revision devoted to Corsica to a vote by the National Assembly and the Senate before the end of the first half of 2024” . To be validated, this constitutional reform must then be voted on by three-fifths of Congress in the fall of 2024.
