Cost of living: more and more French people rent their accommodation on Airbnb

The number of French people who chose to rent their accommodation to make ends meet increased by 30% in the second quarter of 2022 compared to the same period in 2019.

In a gloomy economic climate, a growing number of French people have decided to make their accommodation profitable by renting it out on Airbnb. This is shown by figures from the American platform, published by The Parisian , covering the second quarter of 2022. According to the document, the number of new guests would have increased by 30% compared to the same period of 2019. An approach often crowned with success in a context of post-Covid tourist recovery. Newcomers to the platform can thus generate an average income nearly 40% higher than that of new hosts who joined Airbnb during the same period in 2019. In general, all renters are winners, since the average income in the second quarter 2022 is up 35%, to more than 1,550 euros, according to Airbnb.

Of course, Paris is taking full advantage of the return of international tourism. Nevertheless, less urbanized areas are enjoying renewed attractiveness for holidays. Some departments are seeing the offer explode. This is the case of La Sarthe, where the number of guests has been multiplied by 2.5 compared to 2019. In Yonne, the increase is 80%, 70% for Gers and 60% for Doubs . Drôme and Ain are also experiencing leaps of more than 50%.

“HASAs the cost of living continues to rise, purchasing power is a major concern for French people and it’s no surprise to see more people capitalizing on their accommodation – usually their biggest expense – to host travelers and increase their income», Analyzes Emmanuel Marill, EMEA Director of Airbnb.

Success with groups and families

On the tenant side, the platform is particularly popular with groups of five travelers or more (+60%) and families (+70%). In June 2022, the average cost of accommodation per person for a group trip (5 people and more) on Airbnb was 47.30 euros per night (for an average duration of 4.5 days).

Regarding the destinations, the cities near the Disneyland theme park such as Serris and Montévrain, as well as the localities rich in cultural heritage, such as Villeneuve-Loubet (Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur) or Colmar (Grand Est) have particularly attracted families.
