Costa Rica: Cargo plane splits in two during emergency landing

It is an extraordinary accident that occurred this Thursday in Costa Rica. A cargo plane carrying letters and parcels broke in two during an emergency landing on the runway of the airport in San José, the capital.

If the images can be impressive, fortunately the accident did not make any victim, however the airport was closed temporarily, let know the authorities.

Two crew members, of Guatemalan nationality, who were on board the plane were taken care of by the emergency services and transported as a precaution to a hospital in order to be examined there, informed Guido Vasquez, one Red Cross rescue workers.

The Costa Rican Fire Chief, Hector Chaves, also added that “the two people who were in the device are in good health”.

The plane turned around

The plane, which is a Boeing-757, belonging to the German group DHL, had taken off about twenty minutes from San José airport, and was to go to Guatemala, when the pilot issued a report following a problem with the hydraulic system. As explained by Julian Belliard, the director of operations and security of the Aeris company which manages the airport, the pilot “had asked to turn around”.

However, not everything went as planned, since during the emergency landing around 4:30 p.m., the aircraft skidded before leaving the runway and splitting in two.

For nearly six hours, all operations at Juan Santamaria airport had to be stopped, which impacted a hundred flights and 8,500 passengers. However, Aeris general manager Ricardo Hernandez later said that “airport activity has returned to normal for both arrivals and departures”.
