Wagner says goodbye to the riot with ascent

SpVgg Unterhaching returns to the 3rd football league: The champions of the Bavarian regional league beat Energie Cottbus in two promotion games. The fans from Cottbus bring the game to the brink of demolition, the promoted team needs a new coach.

The SpVgg Unterhaching is back in the 3rd division – but has to look for a new coach for the new season: Sandro Wagner, who led Bayern back up after two years in the fourth division, had already played against the Northeast champions before the promotion games Energie Cottbus announced his departure. Where the former national striker is going is still unknown.

But one thing is clear: with the 2-0 win in the second leg, Unterhaching can continue to write its own great third-division history. In the all-time table of the league, the game association occupies 5th place. Mathias Fetsch (17th minute) and Simon Skarlatidis (90th +3) scored the goals for the promoted team. Energie Cottbus, on the other hand, remains fourth-class in its regional league season despite the championship. The former Bundesliga club could not repair the 1: 2 from the first leg.

The game had been temporarily interrupted due to fan riots. When the score was 1-0 for Unterhaching, Cottbus fans threw flares, beer mugs and iron bars onto the pitch about 20 minutes before the end of the game. Within seconds, dozens of police officers were on the field and used tear gas. Energy trainer Claus-Dieter Wollitz and President Sebastian Lemke went to their own fans and tried to calm the situation. With an enormous police presence on the sidelines, the duel continued in front of 12,500 spectators and finally ended.

Previously, VfB Lübeck (champion regional league north), Preußen Münster (west) and SSV Ulm (southwest) had already secured promotion. SV Meppen, VfB Oldenburg, FSV Zwickau and SpVgg Bayreuth were relegated.
